Amy and Rex tumbled back into their lives, the dust of their grand adventure still clinging to their clothes and, more importantly, to their perspectives. Russo, oblivious to the existential shifts occurring in his humans, was already halfway up the curtains, his little nails scrabbling for purchase. Amy watched him, a genuine smile replacing the usual sigh. “Look at him, Rex,” she murmured, her voice full of a newfound fondness. “He really does think he’s a mountain goat, doesn’t he?”

Rex chuckled, leaning against the doorframe. “A very small, very loud, very paper-eating mountain goat, perhaps. But you know what? I wouldn’t trade him for all the well-behaved, non-shredding dogs in the world.” He scratched behind Russo’s ears as the little dog finally surrendered to gravity and landed with a soft thump on the rug. “We tried to tame him, Amy. We tried to make him fit into our neat little boxes. But that’s not Russo. He’s meant to climb, meant to chew, meant to… well, meant to be Russo.”
