Russo's Rooftop Rendezvous

Russo, with his stubby legs and a heart that pounded like a drum solo in a tiny chest, surveyed the world from his usual vantage point: the very top of the refrigerator. It wasn't just a refrigerator; to Russo, it was Mount Frostbite, a formidable peak that tested the mettle of any true mountain goat. He’d scaled it this morning, a feat that involved a daring leap from the kitchen counter, a quick scramble over the fruit bowl, and a final, triumphant wriggle onto the cool, smooth surface. From up here, he could see everything: Amy Kathryn humming as she made toast, Rex wrestling with a particularly stubborn shoelace, and the tantalizing, forbidden territory of the mailbox just outside the front door.

His gaze, however, was drawn to something far more intriguing. A flash of bright red, a tiny speck of color, had landed precariously on the edge of the apartment building’s roof. It was a ribbon, the very same ribbon that had adorned the gift Rex had given Amy Kathryn for their anniversary. He’d seen her tie it around a bouquet of wildflowers the day before, and now, caught by a mischievous gust of wind, it was performing a daring aerial ballet, inches from a terrifying drop.
