The Case of the Missing Map
Disaster strikes! The map to their destination is lost. Panic sets in as they retrace their steps, but Russo, sniffing the ground, seems to have a clue. His nose is his guide.
The air in the car buzzed with a nervous energy that had nothing to do with the rattling of the engine. Amy Kathryn and Rex, their faces etched with a fine layer of worry, were a study in controlled panic. Baby Blue Bears, usually a whirlwind of enthusiastic yips and tail wags, sat unusually still in his carrier, his large ears drooping ever so slightly. Russo, however, was a different story. He’d managed to wedge himself between the front seats, his little nose twitching with a mixture of excitement and confusion. He loved car rides, loved the fuzzy feeling of adventure that always accompanied them, but even he could sense the shift in the human atmosphere.
“It’s gone, Rex. It’s just… gone,” Amy Kathryn whispered, her voice laced with disbelief. She patted down the pockets of her jacket for the tenth time, her fingers fumbling with the worn fabric. The folded, crinkled map, their trusty guide to the legendary Whispering Waterfall, had vanished as if spirited away by a mischievous forest sprite.
Rex sighed, a sound that conveyed a thousand unspoken frustrations. “Are you absolutely sure you had it when we left the house, Ames?”
