Beneath the Velvet
Elara witnesses a glimpse of Valerius's true power and the harsh realities of his kingdom. The darkness she feared is more profound, but also strangely protective.
The gilded bars of my cage had, until this moment, felt more like gilded threads, shimmering and alluring. Now, they were bars, stark and unyielding, and the opulent room I occupied was a prison, however exquisitely appointed. Valerius had left me with a curt instruction to wait, a command that had settled in my bones with the weight of stone. I had obeyed, of course, because obedience, I was quickly learning, was a currency in this world, and I had very little else to offer.
I paced the length of the chamber, the plush carpet muffling my footsteps, a stark contrast to the thudding panic in my chest. The tapestries depicting scenes of ancient battles and stern-faced monarchs felt like silent witnesses to my predicament. They spoke of a history I was now inextricably a part of, a history steeped in power and, I suspected, a great deal of bloodshed. My initial bewilderment had morphed into a chilling comprehension. This wasn't a fairy tale, and Valerius was no charming prince. He was something far older, far more dangerous, and I, Elara Vance, was caught in his intricate, deadly web.
Outside the tall, arched windows, the sky was a bruised purple, the last vestiges of daylight surrendering to an encroaching twilight. The city, visible in the distance, was a sprawl of dark spires and flickering lights, a kingdom built on shadows. It was beautiful, in a terrifying, untamed way. It was *his* kingdom. And I was here, a willing captive, my curiosity warring with a primal urge to flee.
