The air in the Grand Hall of Thorne Manor crackled with an unspoken tension, a palpable hum that vibrated through the polished marble floors and up into the gilded ceilings. It was a different kind of silence than the hushed whispers of the corridors, a silence pregnant with anticipation, heavy with the weight of expectation. I stood beside Valerius, my hand resting lightly on his arm, a gesture that felt both foreign and alarmingly natural. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, each beat echoing the fear that coiled in my stomach.

Valerius, however, was a picture of regal composure. His dark eyes, usually smoldering with a controlled intensity, held a glacial calm as he surveyed the assembly of nobles, courtiers, and… whatever else these shadowed figures represented. They were a sea of opulent fabrics, gleaming jewels, and faces that held a thousand secrets. I felt like a moth caught in a spider's web, beautiful and doomed.

“My Lords, my Ladies,” Valerius’s voice, a deep baritone that had the power to both soothe and terrify, resonated through the vast space. “You gather today under a banner of unity, a testament to the strength of our lineage.” He paused, his gaze sweeping over the crowd, lingering for a fraction of a second on Lord Silas Blackwood, whose smile seemed a touch too sharp, too practiced. A shiver traced its way down my spine.
