The air in the grand ballroom of Thorne Manor was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and something far more primal, a subtle undercurrent of power that clung to the shadows like velvet. Chandeliers dripped with crystals, casting a warm, golden glow that did little to dispel the chill that had settled deep within me since my arrival. It was a chill born not of the temperature, but of the watchful eyes that followed my every move. And at the center of it all, a dark star around whom this glittering galaxy revolved, was Prince Valerius.
He was across the room, a study in obsidian and moonlight. His gaze, when it drifted towards me, was a physical thing, a silken leash that tightened around my heart. I could feel its weight, its possessiveness, even from this distance. It was both terrifying and… exhilarating. A dangerous dance I was only just beginning to learn the steps to.
“He watches you,” Seraphina’s voice, a soft murmur beside me, drew my attention. Her eyes, the color of faded lavender, held a depth of sorrow that always made me uneasy. She clutched a delicate fan, its ivory bones clicking softly against her gloved hand. “Like a hawk watches its prey.”
