The heavy velvet curtains of my chambers did little to block out the encroaching twilight, but they did little to obscure the churning in my stomach either. Each day bled into the next, a monotonous cycle of ornate meals, silent servants, and the ever-present weight of Valerius’s gaze, even when he wasn’t physically present. Thorne Manor was a gilded cage, and I was its increasingly restless bird.
I traced the intricate patterns of the silk duvet, the cool fabric a stark contrast to the heat that bloomed within me whenever the thought of him surfaced. It was a dangerous heat, one that whispered forbidden things, things I’d spent weeks trying to extinguish. Yet, it persisted, a stubborn ember refusing to die. I was drawn to him, undeniably so, in a way that defied all logic and self-preservation.
His possessiveness was a suffocating blanket, a constant reminder that I was his, a prize claimed and held against my will. He’d made it clear from the outset, his words like polished obsidian, sharp and final. *“You are mine, Elara. You will not leave my sight.”* And I hadn’t. Not truly. Every excursion outside my chambers was under his watchful eye, or the watchful eyes of his ever-present guards.
