The silence that descended after Silas’s final breath was more profound than any scream. It was a heavy, suffocating cloak, woven from the aftermath of violence and the stark realization that the storm had, for now, passed. I stood beside Valerius, my hand still trembling where it had gripped his, the phantom warmth of his skin a stark contrast to the chilling stillness in the grand hall. The air, thick with the metallic tang of blood, felt cleaner somehow, as if Silas’s ambition had been a poison that had finally been purged.

Valerius’s gaze, usually a tempest of dark intensity, was now a molten pool, fixed on me. There was a raw vulnerability in his eyes I hadn’t seen before, a stark testament to the battle we had just endured. He didn’t speak, and neither did I. Words felt inadequate, clumsy things that couldn’t possibly capture the enormity of what had transpired, the precipice we teetered on.

Slowly, he raised his free hand, his thumb brushing a stray strand of hair from my cheek. His touch, usually possessive and demanding, was gentle, almost tentative. “Elara,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through my very bones.
