His dark gaze, usually so guarded, was now a tempest of emotions I was only beginning to decipher.

He reached out, his fingers tracing the faint, angry line of a cut across my cheekbone. His touch was feather-light, yet it sent a tremor through me, a stark contrast to the brutal force he’d wielded against Silas and his men. “Are you well, Elara?” His voice was a low rumble, laced with a possessiveness that no longer felt like a threat, but a fierce, protective shield.

I nodded, my throat tight. “I’m… I’m alright, Valerius.” The lie felt thin, even to my own ears. My heart still hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a testament to the terror and the strange, intoxicating exhilaration that had coursed through me during the fight. I had seen the raw power he possessed, the almost primal ferocity with which he’d defended me, and a part of me, the part that had been so terrified, now felt a dangerous sense of awe.
