The air in the grand hall crackled, thick with an anticipation that was both thrilling and terrifying. It wasn’t the hushed reverence of a royal ceremony, but the coiled tension of a predator’s pounce. Silas Blackwood stood before us, a stark contrast to the opulent tapestries and gilded chandeliers that normally softened the edges of this space. His usual veneer of charming courtesy had evaporated, replaced by a chillingly sharp edge. His eyes, usually dancing with amusement, now held a predatory gleam, fixed on Valerius, and then, with a flick that sent a shiver down my spine, on me.
“So, the little songbird finally emerges from her gilded cage,” Silas purred, the sound like silk dragged over rough stone. His gaze swept over me, assessing, dismissive, and utterly infuriating. “And here I thought you were merely a pretty distraction, Prince. It seems I underestimated your… taste.”
My hand instinctively tightened on Valerius’s arm. His presence beside me was a solid anchor, a silent promise of protection that was both comforting and, I admitted to myself with a jolt, a little addictive. He didn’t flinch at Silas’s insult, his own gaze a cold, unyielding glacier.
