The air in the grand hall crackled, not with the usual hushed reverence of Thorne Manor, but with a tension so thick it felt like a physical weight pressing down on my chest. It had been building for days, a slow burn of unease that Seraphina’s hushed warnings had only fanned into a nervous flame. Now, it was a wildfire. Lord Silas Blackwood, his face a mask of charming concern that didn’t quite reach his calculating eyes, stood before the assembled court. Prince Valerius stood beside me, his hand a firm, possessive anchor on my waist, his gaze fixed on Silas with an unnerving stillness.

“My Prince,” Silas began, his voice smooth as polished obsidian, “it is with a heavy heart that I must bring forth these… allegations.” He paused, letting the word hang in the air like a venomous dart, and a ripple of murmurs spread through the assembled nobles. “For weeks, whispers have circulated, concerning the Prince’s judgment, his… distractions.” His gaze flickered towards me, and a chill snaked down my spine. “Distractions that have left the kingdom vulnerable.”

Valerius’s grip tightened, a silent promise of protection or perhaps possession. His jaw was set, his aura radiating a controlled fury that I was beginning to recognize. He didn’t speak, letting Silas weave his web.
