The air in Valerius’s study was thick with a tension I was beginning to recognize. It wasn't the simmering, unspoken kind that had laced our earlier encounters, but a sharp, brittle energy that vibrated just beneath the surface of his forced calm. He stood by the tall, arched window, his silhouette stark against the bruised twilight sky, his gaze fixed on something far beyond the manicured gardens. He’d been like this for days, a coiled viper, his usual possessive warmth replaced by a chilling pragmatism.

“What is it, Valerius?” I finally ventured, my voice barely a whisper in the cavernous room. I sat curled on a velvet chaise, a book of ancient lore lying forgotten in my lap. Every instinct screamed danger, a premonition that had grown steadily since Seraphina’s hushed warnings.

He didn’t turn, his voice a low rumble that seemed to emanate from the very stones of the manor. “Trouble, Elara. The kind that doesn’t announce itself with trumpets and banners.”
