He stood by the grand fireplace, the flames casting dancing light across his sharp features, highlighting the stark planes of his face and the unsettling depth of his eyes. I watched him, my breath catching in my throat, as he turned to face me, his gaze unwavering.
“You wish to understand,” he began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in my chest. It wasn’t a question. He knew. He always knew.
I nodded, my gaze fixed on his. “I… I need to. This place, you… it’s all so much. And I don’t understand why *I* am here.” The words tumbled out, a desperate plea for clarity in this labyrinth of opulence and veiled threats.
