Lee Soo-jin pressed her back against the cold stone wall of the maintenance tunnel, her breath shallow and her pulse hammering in her ears. The faint glow of her phone screen illuminated the narrow passage, casting long shadows that danced like specters. She had been hiding for months, ever since the northern border incident had forced her into the shadows, and now her carefully constructed refuge was crumbling.
The message she had sent to Aria was a gamble. A warning. A plea. But as she stared at the blank screen where the texts had vanished, doubt gnawed at her. Had she done the right thing? Or had she just painted a target on Aria's back?
She heard footsteps—soft, measured, deliberate—and her hand flew to the knife strapped to her thigh. The tunnel curved ahead, and she flattened herself against the wall, waiting.
