The air in the cellar hung heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and aged wood, a smell that had begun to seep into my very clothes, clinging to me like a second skin. Elara held the lantern high, its feeble glow carving out islands of light in the cavernous darkness. The hidden passage, revealed by the loose stone our father’s journal had so cryptically referenced, yawned before us, a narrow maw leading deeper into the earth. Dust motes danced in the lantern’s beam, tiny spirits roused from their long slumber. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing the unspoken question in Elara’s wide eyes: what fresh hell lay beyond?
“Are you sure about this, Jules?” Her voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the stillness. It was the closest she’d come to expressing trepidation since we’d arrived, a crack in her usual facade of steely resolve.
I swallowed, the dryness in my throat making it a chore. “His journal led us here. What else could it be?” The words sounded braver than I felt. The truth was, every instinct screamed at me to turn back, to ignore the whispers, to leave the past buried. But the image of Elara’s face as she’d read the last entry – “*The truth lies beneath, where shadows converge and secrets bloom*” – had etched itself into my mind. She deserved answers, we both did, even if they were ugly.
