Chapter 5

Ghost of a Smile

A face emerges from the swirling drug haze, soft and kind, a woman he once loved. Sarah. Her laughter, a distant echo, seems to mock his current state. He remembers her warmth, her belief in him, a stark contrast to the self-loathing that now consumes him. Was she real? Or another phantom conjured by his fractured psyche? The memory is a sharp pang of loss, a reminder of a life he threw away, a happiness he forfeited. He traces the phantom outline of her smile, a ghost in the grimy room, a symbol of everything he can no longer have.

The stale air in Room 143 tasted of regret and something metallic, something Stephen couldn't quite place, but it clung to the back of his throat like a dying breath. He’d been here, in this purgatory of peeling wallpaper and stained carpet, for what felt like an eternity. Days bled into nights, marked only by the shifting patterns of the neon sign outside, a lurid pulse against the bruised sky. The meth, a crystalline promise of escape, had delivered him here, to this hollowed-out shell of a man, to this room that felt less like a sanctuary and more like a tomb.

He’d counted the bullets, his thumb tracing the cool, smooth steel of the Colt 1911. Two. Just two. Enough to silence the cacophony in his head, enough to erase the gnawing emptiness. Then, through the thick, syrupy haze of his addiction, a different image began to form. It wasn't sharp, not like the others. It was soft, indistinct, like a photograph left too long in the sun. A face. A woman’s face. Her eyes, the color of warm honey, crinkled at the corners. Her smile… it was a curve of pure, unadulterated joy, a ghost of a smile that managed to pierce through the suffocating darkness. Sarah.
