Chapter 4
Cracks in the Cynicism
Amelia and Finn's witty exchanges and shared amusement at the dating event's absurdity grow into genuine conversations. As they spend more time together, Amelia finds her hardened shell beginning to crack, questioning if her cynical view of romance might be flawed.
The fluorescent lights of the “Cupid’s Arrow” event hall hummed with an almost aggressive cheerfulness, a stark contrast to the inner turmoil churning within Amelia. Chloe, radiating an aura of pure, unadulterated joy, had practically dragged her here, her grip on Amelia’s arm as unyielding as a toddler’s on a cookie jar. “Isn’t this marvelous, Ames?” Chloe chirped, her eyes scanning the room, alight with the fervent hope of a thousand rom-com heroines. “So many potential soulmates! Amelia imagined. She imagined a stampede for the exit, a sudden outbreak of mass hysteria, or perhaps a spontaneous combustion of all the glitterbombs Chloe had insisted on scattering around the venue. “I’m imagining a very large bill for therapy, Chloe,” Amelia muttered, tugging her arm free. “And possibly a restraining order against anyone who uses the word ‘destiny’ within a fifty-foot radius.”
Her initial foray into the dating event had been, predictably, a disaster. There was the man who’d spent twenty minutes detailing his extensive collection of vintage stamps, punctuated by fervent whispers about the rarity of a particular 1952 Penny Black. Then came the woman who, upon learning Amelia owned a bookstore, had launched into a tearful, unsolicited review of her own unpublished manuscript, a sprawling epic about a sentient teacup’s quest for existential meaning. Amelia had feigned a sudden, violent allergy to polyester.
