The verdant haze that had once been so comforting now seemed to recoil, its vibrant hues dimming as if a shroud were being drawn across the sun. A chill, deeper than any Robin had felt on the frozen battlefields of the Ardennes, seeped into his bones. It wasn't just the absence of warmth; it was an active, gnawing cold that seemed to leech the very life from the air. He looked at Elara, her usually serene face etched with a new kind of gravity, her eyes, like pools of starlight, now troubled.
"It begins," she murmured, her voice barely a breath against the growing silence. The chirping of unseen creatures, the rustling of leaves, the gentle hum of this alien world – all seemed to falter, then cease altogether. A profound stillness descended, broken only by the frantic thumping of Robin’s own heart.
He scanned the landscape, his soldier’s instinct kicking in, searching for a threat, a tangible enemy. But there was nothing to see, only this creeping, insidious change. The leaves of the peculiar, bell-shaped flora, which had unfurled with such eager curiosity earlier, now drooped, their edges curling inward as if in agony. The bioluminescent moss that had carpeted the ground in a soft, ethereal glow flickered and died, leaving behind patches of dull, lifeless earth.
