Chapter 4
The Enigmatic Guide
A mysterious figure, Elara, appears. Her ancient eyes hold a knowing gaze, and her words are cryptic. She speaks of destiny, a looming threat, and Robin's unexpected arrival in this land of magic.
The air hung thick and strange, a cloying sweetness tinged with the metallic tang of something Robin couldn’t quite place. It wasn’t the acrid bite of cordite or the damp decay of the Belgian earth he knew. This was… different. He pushed himself up, his muscles screaming in protest, his uniform stiff and damp with sweat and something that might have been blood, though he couldn’t recall being hit. The splintered wood of the floor panel dug into his palms. He looked down at the jagged hole he’d fallen through, a black maw in the otherwise unremarkable wooden floor of the abandoned farmhouse. He’d been so desperate for cover, for just a moment’s respite from the relentless artillery. Now, he wished he’d stayed in the mud and chaos.
He scrambled to his feet, his rifle still clutched in a white-knuckled grip. The room was small, sparsely furnished, and bathed in an ethereal, moss-green light that seemed to emanate from the very walls. Strange, bioluminescent fungi clung to the damp plaster, casting an unsettling glow. The silence was profound, broken only by the frantic thumping of his own heart. Outside, the war raged on, a distant thunder that felt impossibly far away, yet terrifyingly close. He took a tentative step, his boot sinking slightly into a carpet of soft, velvety moss that had replaced the floorboards. It yielded beneath his weight, springy and cool.
He moved towards the single window, his gaze scanning the unfamiliar landscape beyond. Towering trees, their bark like polished obsidian, formed a dense canopy overhead, filtering the unseen sun into dappled patterns of emerald and gold. Giant, fern-like fronds unfurled with slow, deliberate grace, and flowers the size of dinner plates pulsed with an inner light, their petals shifting through shades of amethyst and sapphire. No birdsong, no insect hum, just a pervasive, humming silence that set his teeth on edge. This was no Belgian forest. This was… somewhere else entirely.
