Chapter 11
The First Stand
Robin and Elara confront a significant manifestation of the Shadow Weaver's influence. Robin uses his developing abilities in a real battle, facing creatures born from the encroaching darkness.
The air in the clearing tasted of ozone and decay, a sickly sweetness that clung to Robin’s tongue like spoiled honey. He’d expected the stench of battle, the acrid bite of cordite and the metallic tang of blood, but this was something else entirely, something ancient and wrong. Beside him, Elara stood unnervingly still, her luminous eyes fixed on the edge of the phosphorescent forest. The trees here, twisted and skeletal, pulsed with a faint, internal light, their branches clawing at a sky that was a bruised, perpetual twilight.
“They come,” Elara’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the unnerving silence that had fallen over their small group. Sergeant Miller, his face a mask of grim determination, gripped his rifle, his knuckles white. Corporal Davies, younger and visibly trembling, clutched a grenade, his gaze darting between Elara and the encroaching gloom. Robin himself felt a cold dread coil in his gut, a primal instinct screaming at him to turn and run, yet his feet remained rooted to the moss-covered ground. He had faced the horrors of war, the blinding terror of artillery and the desperate fear of the bayonet charge, but this… this was a different kind of fear, a creeping, insidious dread that seeped into his very bones.
From the shadowed depths of the woods, a sound began to emanate. It was not a roar, nor a hiss, but a low, guttural keening, a chorus of despair that seemed to vibrate through the earth itself. Then they emerged. Not like soldiers marching in formation, but like a tide of viscous shadow given form. They were vaguely humanoid, their limbs elongated and impossibly thin, their bodies cloaked in a darkness that seemed to absorb the scant light of this alien world. Their faces, if they could be called faces, were mere voids, pits of utter blackness from which emanated that soul-chilling lament. These were the creatures Elara had warned him about, the manifestations of the encroaching darkness.
