The forest floor, usually a tapestry of fallen leaves and dappled sunlight, had become a treacherous maze. Brambles snagged at her cloak, and unseen roots threatened to trip her with every hurried step. Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the oppressive silence of the woods. She’d been foolish, too eager, venturing too deep without a clearer plan. The pursuit, if one could even call it that, had been more of a panicked flight. The men who’d chased her from the village, their faces grim and their intentions clear, had been unnervingly swift. The sounds of their pursuit faltered, then receded, replaced by confused murmurs and the rustle of retreating footsteps.

Elara sank to her knees, her legs trembling, a wave of relief so potent it felt like exhaustion washing over her. She stayed there for a long time, listening to the forest reclaim its quiet, the only sound her own unsteady breathing. When she finally looked up, the figure was gone.
