Chapter 11
Fear in the Castle
Baron Fitzwilliam grows increasingly desperate as his authority erodes. The people's whispers turn to open defiance, inspired by the tales of Robin Hood and the reporter's hidden truths.
Baron Fitzwilliam paced the length of his solar, the heavy tapestries doing little to muffle the restless sounds of his own agitation. Outside, the wind howled like a hungry wolf, mirroring the gnawing fear in his gut. For weeks, his grip on the surrounding villages had felt less like a vise and more like a slipping hand. The whispers, once easily silenced, had grown into a murmur, then a hum, and now, he feared, it was on the cusp of becoming a roar.
He stopped by the mullioned window, his reflection a pale, anxious face staring back from the rain-streaked glass. The grounds of his castle, usually a testament to his power, felt exposed, vulnerable. The meticulously kept gardens seemed to mock him with their ordered beauty, so unlike the chaos brewing beyond his walls. He could almost feel the eyes upon him, the silent judgment that had begun to seep into every corner of his domain.
It was the reporter, he suspected. That sharp-eyed young woman, always asking questions, always scribbling in her little book. She had been a thorn in his side since her arrival, a persistent fly buzzing around the edges of his carefully constructed reality. First, she had been merely an annoyance, a nuisance to be tolerated. Now, she was a symbol, a beacon for the very discontent he sought to extinguish. He’d heard the rumours, of course, carried by his increasingly unreliable informants. They spoke of her articles, appearing like magic in the market squares, penned anonymously, yet filled with a chilling accuracy about the burdens he’d placed upon the people. The increased tithes, the exorbitant fees for using the miller’s wheel, the harsh penalties for even the smallest infractions – she had laid it all bare, weaving it into a narrative of oppression that resonated with the very souls of his tenants.
