The air in the alley was thick with the scent of damp concrete and something else, something he couldn't quite place – a metallic tang, perhaps, or the ghost of forgotten spices. Leo’s heart hammered a frantic, off-beat rhythm against his ribs, a stark contrast to the steady, hypnotic pulse he’d overheard moments before. He’d followed the sound, drawn by an irresistible curiosity that warred with a primal urge to retreat. Now, standing at the threshold of a small, hidden courtyard, he felt like an intruder, a stray dog sniffing at a warm hearth.

A handful of figures were gathered in the dim light, their faces obscured by shadows cast by a single, bare bulb dangling precariously from a wire. As she approached, the dim light caught the silver threads woven into her dark hair, and the gentle lines etched around her eyes, suggesting a wisdom that transcended mere years.

"You lingered," she said, her voice a low murmur, like pebbles smoothed by a river. It wasn't a question, but an observation, delivered with a calm assurance that disarmed his apprehension.

Leo swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. "I… I heard the music. It was… different."

A faint smile touched her lips, a fleeting shadow in the twilight. "Different. Yes, it can be." She gestured subtly towards the group, who had momentarily stilled, their attention now focused on their silent exchange. "They are… sharing. A conversation without words, perhaps."

"I don't understand," Leo admitted, the insecurity he’d carried
