The pebbles grew warmer as I climbed, their heat a steady pulse against my palm. I had been walking for hours, following the pull eastward through the ravine and into the foothills. The terrain grew steeper, the trees thinning to scrub and then to bare rock. My legs ached, and my throat was parched, but I did not stop. Every time I slowed, the stones glowed brighter, urging me forward.
I thought of Ingrid, of the clash I had heard behind me. Was she alive? Had she escaped or been captured? I pushed the questions away. She had given me this chance, and I would not waste it.
By midday, I reached a ridge that overlooked a valley of grey stone. In its center lay a lake, perfectly still, reflecting the pale sky like a polished mirror. Mirror Lake. The name fit. The water was so calm it looked like a sheet of glass, with no ripples, no movement. It seemed unnatural, as if the lake were holding its breath.
