The air in the boardroom still felt thick with unspoken grief, a phantom scent of my father’s pipe tobacco clinging to the polished mahogany. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed hesitant today, casting long, somber shadows across the room. It was here, in this space that had always felt so grand and yet so intimately mine, that I was to officially take the reins of Vance Industries. My mother sat across from me, a statue of icy composure, her gaze fixed somewhere beyond the panoramic window overlooking the bustling town that owed so much to my father’s vision. Her presence was a constant, chilling reminder of the chasm that had always existed between us, a void that his death had only widened.
Mr. Silas Croft, his face a roadmap of loyalty and quiet concern, stood beside me, his usual stoic demeanor softened by a hint of paternal pride. He had been my father’s right-hand man for thirty years, a silent guardian of Vance Industries’ legacy. He cleared his throat, the sound a small disruption in the heavy silence.
“Elara,” he began, his voice a low rumble, “the shareholders are eager to hear your plans. The company has weathered… significant changes. Your father’s vision was always one of progress, of innovation, but also of integrity. We all trust you to carry that forward.”
