The air in the workshop, usually thick with the comforting scent of wood shavings and varnish, now felt heavy, stagnant, like a breath held too long. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the silent machinery that had once hummed with my father’s ambition. Silas stood beside me, his gaze fixed on the intricate gears of a half-finished chair, his silence a familiar weight. We had been here for hours, sifting through the detritus of my father’s final projects, looking for a ghost, a clue, anything to justify the gnawing unease that had settled in my gut like stones.
"He loved this place," Silas murmured, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the stillness. He ran a calloused thumb over a smooth, unvarnished curve of wood. "Mr. Vance. He poured his soul into every piece."
I nodded, my throat tight. The memory of his pride, the way his eyes would light up when he spoke of a new design, was a phantom limb, an ache for something lost. “And now… it feels like it’s being slowly dismantled.”
