My days had become a delicate dance of feigned ignorance and silent observation. I attended the dinners Mother insisted upon, a suffocating tableau of forced smiles and polite conversation. I listened to her speak of the business, her voice smooth as polished marble, detailing strategies and market trends with an expertise that both impressed and terrified me. It was a performance, I knew, a carefully constructed facade to mask the rot beneath. Silas Croft, Father’s most trusted foreman, was a constant presence, his gaze often lingering on me with a mixture of concern and something akin to pity. He was a man of few words, but his eyes held a depth of knowledge, a silent testament to years spent observing the ebb and flow of our family’s fortunes. I felt a kinship with him, a shared understanding of the unspoken anxieties that now permeated the Vance name.

“The quarterly reports are looking…robust, wouldn’t you agree, Mother?” I’d say, my voice carefully pitched to sound merely curious, not accusatory.
