The clatter of gears, usually a comforting symphony of progress, had turned into a strangled groan. It was a sound that sent a chill down my spine, a noise I’d come to associate with the unraveling of everything my father had painstakingly built. The main stamping machine, the heart of Vance Industries, was wheezing like an old man on his deathbed. Black smoke, thick and acrid, billowed from its innards, coating the polished concrete floor in a greasy film.

“What in heaven’s name is going on?” Silas’s voice, usually a low rumble, was laced with alarm. He stood beside me, his weathered face etched with concern, his gaze fixed on the dying behemoth. It was mid-morning, and the workshop, usually alive with the rhythmic dance of workers, was now a tableau of hushed panic. A crucial contract, the one that would secure our financial future for the next fiscal year, was due for delivery in two weeks. This was not just a malfunction; it was a catastrophe.

“I don’t know, Mr. Croft,” I replied, my voice barely a whisper. My eyes scanned the scene, trying to make sense of the chaos. The air hung heavy with the smell of burnt oil and something metallic, something sharp and unpleasant that pricked at my nostrils. “It was running perfectly an hour ago.”
