The weight of the world, or at least the world that mattered, felt like it was settling onto my shoulders with the suffocating finality of a tombstone. Each day was a careful ballet of feigned normalcy, a performance I’d perfected for my mother’s benefit, while beneath the surface, a maelstrom raged. The Vance & Sons legacy, once a beacon of prosperity and my father’s proudest achievement, was slowly, insidiously, crumbling. The whispers I’d initially dismissed as idle gossip had coalesced into a chilling chorus of concern, each note a barb aimed at the heart of what my father had built.

It was during one of these suffocating afternoons, the air in my father’s study thick with the scent of aged paper and unspoken grief, that I finally broke. The carefully constructed dam of my composure gave way, and the flood of my anxieties spilled out. I needed to speak to someone, anyone, who wouldn't see me as simply Arthur Vance's grieving daughter or Eleanor Vance's silent shadow. I needed Deborah.

Her small, sun-drenched apartment was an oasis of warmth, a stark contrast to the cold, sterile grandeur of the Vance mansion. The aroma of brewing coffee, strong and comforting, filled the air as she greeted me with her usual effervescent smile. It faltered slightly when she took in the haunted look in my eyes, the tremor in my hands as I accepted the mug she offered.
