The air in the Vance Corporation boardroom had always held a certain weight, a silent testament to my father’s meticulous hand in its construction. Now, it felt thick with a different kind of pressure, one that emanated from the head of the polished mahogany table, from Eleanor. My mother. Her posture was a study in regal composure, a stark contrast to the churning unease in my gut. She addressed the assembled executives, her voice a cool, measured stream that flowed over the polished surfaces of the room, reflecting nothing of the storm I suspected brewed beneath.

“We have weathered recent… disruptions,” she began, her gaze sweeping across the room, lingering a fraction longer on me than on anyone else. It was a subtle shift, almost imperceptible, but I felt it like a prickle of static electricity. Disruptions. That was her term for the unraveling that had begun the moment my father’s laughter had been silenced forever. “However,” she continued, a hint of steely resolve entering her tone, “the Vance Corporation is built on a foundation of resilience. We will not falter.”

Her words were meant to inspire confidence, to project an image of unwavering strength. But I saw the calculated performance, the practiced smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She was a conductor, orchestrating a symphony of denial, and I was the dissonant note she was desperately trying to suppress.
