The scent of aged paper and something faintly metallic, like old coins, clung to the air in the archive room. It was a place I’d only visited a handful of times with Father, a place he always referred to with a dismissive wave as “the dusty records of yesteryear.” Now, under my mother’s increasingly tight grip, it felt less like a historical repository and more like a tomb. I’d come searching for anything—a misplaced invoice, a forgotten memo—that might shed light on the discrepancies Silas had pointed out. But the ledgers, meticulously organized by date and department, offered no explanation for the phantom expenditures that had begun to plague Vance Industries.

Days blurred into a monotonous cycle of feigned compliance and covert investigation. I’d sit through board meetings, my gaze fixed on my mother’s impassive face, her every word a carefully constructed facade of concern for the company, while inside, a cold dread coiled tighter with each passing hour. She spoke of cost-cutting measures, of streamlining operations, all while the whispers of sabotage grew louder in the workshops, and the financial irregularities continued to surface like grotesque sea creatures from the depths.

It was during one of these late-night vigils in the archive, surrounded by the hushed breath of history, that my fingers brushed against a section of shelving that felt…wrong. It was a small panel, almost imperceptible, camouflaged by the dark wood and the shadows that danced in the dim light of my desk lamp. Curiosity, a trait Father had always encouraged, prickled at my skin. I pressed, and with a soft click, the panel receded, revealing a narrow, dark opening.
