Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Eliza wakes to find the word 'Soon' fading from her drawing. The silence deepens, and the star-shaped key grows warm. She visits Professor Finch, who warns that the theatre's silence is accelerating the timeline. The keeper's voice summons her to the theatre for a preliminary test. Eliza performs a silent story for the shadow audience, earning their approval, but the keeper reveals the full moon test will be harder. As she leaves, the clock tower chimes—though its clock is stopped.
Eliza sat up in bed, her breath shallow. The word 'Soon' on the crumpled paper was already fading, the charcoal lines dissolving like smoke. She clutched the star-shaped key, which pulsed with a steady warmth against her palm. The silence in the room was absolute. No creak of floorboards, no hum of the house settling. Even her own heartbeat seemed muffled.
She swung her legs over the edge of the bed and stood. The floor felt cold, but the silence felt colder. She padded to the window and peered outside. The street below was empty. A cart stood still, its horse motionless as if carved from stone. No birds called. No wind stirred the leaves.
Eliza dressed quickly and went downstairs. Her mother had not yet returned. The note on the kitchen table was still there, but the ink seemed to shimmer, as if alive. Eliza touched it, and the words rearranged themselves: Find the second key before the silence finds you.
