The Voice in the Dark
Eliza, trapped in darkness in the clock tower, faces the mysterious voice that warns her away. Remembering Ms. Petrova's lessons, she uses silent gestures to communicate with the book, revealing the first answer. The voice reveals itself as a guardian, and Eliza learns she must find the second key before the next full moon.
Eliza's heart hammered against her ribs. The darkness was absolute—thicker than any night she had ever known. She could not see her own hand in front of her face. The voice had come from below, but now the silence that followed was even more terrifying.
She pressed her back against the pedestal, the cold stone biting through her coat. Her fingers found the brass key in her pocket, its star-shaped head a small comfort. The smooth stone was still there too, but it had cooled. The lantern was dead, the oil spent or the flame snuffed by some unseen force.
"Who's there?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
