The Ring and the Truth
Eliza and her companions retrieve the focusing ring from the ceiling using the resonance core's pull. They decide to follow Viktor's half-sister, discovering a dropped journal page that reveals her name, Irina, and her plan to destroy the core at the observatory. The core begins pulsing toward a new destination, and they race into the misty dawn.
The darkness pressed in from all sides, broken only by the faint amber glow of the resonance core in Eliza's hands. The ring was still embedded in the ceiling, a dark circle against the cracked plaster. The shards of broken windows glittered on the floor like scattered stars.
"We need that ring," Eliza said, her voice steady despite the trembling in her knees. She looked around the circular room. "Can someone reach it?"
Thomas Crane already had the rope off his shoulder. "I can try to lasso it, but the ceiling is high. I'll need something to stand on."
