Chapter 14
Chapter 14: The Echo's Whisper
Eliza and her companions wait three days, then enter the theatre basement cave. They face three entrances and use the clue 'trust the echo, not the light' to choose the safe path. They retrieve the resonance core but discover a hidden message from Viktor that warns of a final sacrifice.
The three days of waiting felt like three years. Eliza spent every waking moment studying the note from the mysterious woman. 'Trust the echo, not the light.' What did it mean? She repeated the words to herself as she helped Professor Finch organize the observatory's old books, as she walked past the theatre on her way to school, and as she lay in bed at night, listening to the wind rattle her window.
On the morning of the new moon, Eliza met the others at the observatory. Emil Markov was already there, his face drawn and tired. Dr. Voss had brought a small lantern, its glass covered in a wire mesh. 'For the cave,' she explained. 'We don't know what we'll find.' Thomas Crane carried a coil of rope, and Mr. Griggs held a wooden staff that he claimed was good for testing the ground ahead.
Professor Finch arrived last, carrying a heavy leather bag. 'I brought some chalk and a compass,' he said. 'And a few biscuits. We may be there a while.'
