Chapter 7
The Boy Who Remembered
Lina learns the freed boy's name is Mindaugas. He remembers fragments of his time as a wolf, including the location of the signal tower. Jonas connects with him through shared dreams of the moon. Deakonė gives them a map and a compass, and the group sets out at dawn toward the tower, with Mindaugas leading. The chapter deepens bonds between the children and Lina's resolve.
I woke to the smell of woodsmoke and something cooking. My back ached from the narrow bed, and Eliza's small body was pressed against my side, her breath slow and even. Jonas was already awake, sitting cross-legged on the floor next to the boy.
They were talking in low voices. The boy's back was to me, but I could see the curve of his spine, the way his shoulders hunched like he was still expecting a blow.
"I don't remember my name," the boy said. His voice was hoarse, as if he hadn't used it in years.
