Chapter 8
Chapter 8 — Roots Deepening
The narrator wakes to find the pulse unchanged but feels an underlying tension from the boot prints seen the previous evening. At school, the pedagogas teaches a lesson about roots and soil that carries veiled meaning about endurance and hidden strength. The narrator encounters Beptotystes working near the wolf grounds and observes him pressing his hand to the earth, confirming the vibration is felt by others. Sarzaa appears briefly at the cemetery fence, humming a melody the narrator recognizes as connected to something old and buried. Two prokurorai in red caps are seen heading toward the school again. The narrator reflects on the network of silent witnesses and the growing sense that something beneath Jurbarkas is pressing toward the surface.

Not from noise or cold or any identifiable discomfort, but from the awareness that those boot prints existed, that they had been left with purpose, and that their purpose led to the school. Sleep came in fragments, each one shallow and interrupted by the sensation of vibration traveling up through the mattress frame, through the wood of the bed, into the bones of my ribs where they rested against the surface. The pulse had not changed. Its new, longer interval held steady through the night — patient, rhythmic, deep, as though it had found its register and intended to keep it.
Morning arrived gray and still. The kind of stillness that is not peaceful but watchful, the air holding itself tight around the town like a held breath. I dressed and ate without tasting anything and stepped outside onto the path.
The boot prints remained. Frozen into the dirt overnight, preserved in crisp detail, the tread pattern unmistakable in daylight — official soles, rigid and heavy, leaving impressions deeper than any local footwear would make. I studied them for a moment, noting the stride length, the direction, the certainty of the gait. A person walking toward a destination they already knew. A person who had been here before and was returning.
