Chapter 10
Chapter 10 — The Arithmetic of Three
The narrator processes the escalation from two to three prokurorai heading toward the school and follows them back into town. At school, the pedagogas teaches a lesson about geological pressure and sealed chambers, his composure visibly strained under intensified scrutiny. The three prokurorai conduct a longer inspection than previous visits, examining texts and asking pointed questions. The narrator encounters Sarzaa near the cemetery fence afterward, where she sings with a new depth that seems to answer the earth's pulse. Beptotystes is found at the wolf grounds crack, which has widened further overnight, with more soil rising and a faint sound emerging from below. The narrator reflects on how sealed systems fail incrementally and how three red caps represent not just more authority but a tightening grip, ending with the sense that something below and something above are both approaching a breaking point.
Three red caps moved along the road toward the school, and I followed.
Not closely. Not with the obvious trajectory of someone in pursuit. I kept to the path that skirted the wolf grounds and curved past the cemetery's western fence, the route that would bring me to the school's side entrance rather than its front. The prokurorai walked in formation — two abreast, the third a half-step behind and slightly to the left, an asymmetry that caught my eye each time their shapes shifted against the pale morning light. Their red caps were the brightest things in the landscape, brighter than Sarzaa's embroidered collar, brighter than the weak sun behind its membrane of cloud. They moved with the unhurried confidence of people who expected doors to open before they knocked.
I thought about arithmetic. Not the kind the pedagogas taught — clean numbers on a chalkboard, equations that balanced because both sides agreed to hold equal weight. This was the other kind. The kind where adding one to two changed not the quantity but the nature of what was being counted. Two prokurorai meant inspection. Three meant something else. Investigation, perhaps. Or intention. The word did not matter; the weight of it did.
