Chapter 6

The Optimization of Self

Danguole prepares for her coffee meeting with DulcineaSeeker, trying to optimize her appearance and conversation. The meeting reveals a real person, not an ideal, and Danguole learns that true growth comes from accepting imperfection, not efficiency. She reflects on the difference between optimizing code and living a life.

The morning of the coffee meeting arrived with a sky the color of old silver. I stood in front of my wardrobe, staring at the rows of blouses and cardigans as if they were lines of code in a program I needed to debug. What did one wear to meet a stranger who might become more than a stranger? I had optimized my outfits for work, for interviews, for funerals. But I had never optimized for vulnerability.

But optimization, I reminded myself, was not about eliminating all variables. It was about finding the most efficient solution within constraints. The constraints here were simple: two people, a café, one hour. The outcome was unknown. I could not write a function that guaranteed success. I could only prepare the input and let the process run.
