Sophia sat by the window, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across her living room. The quiet hum of the refrigerator and the distant chirping of birds were the only sounds, yet within her, a familiar storm brewed. Chapter Four had ended with a tentative promise, a whisper of possibility that she might, just *might*, be able to loosen the grip of the burdens that had shadowed her for so long. But now, faced with the quiet expanse of her own thoughts, the old anxieties began to stir.

“See? It’s too quiet,” the Inner Critic’s voice, a dry rustle of leaves, slithered into her awareness. “This is just the calm before the real storm. You’ll be back to square one before you know it. Don’t get your hopes up. It’s safer that way.”

Sophia sighed, tracing a condensation trail on the glass with her fingertip. Safer. That was the Inner Critic’s favorite word. Safer to stay small, safer to stay quiet, safer to stay burdened. She remembered the gentle insistence of the Voice of Compassion from their last internal conversation. *“Safety is not the absence of challenge, Sophia. It is the presence of your own strength to meet it.”*
