Scarlet traced the rim of her teacup, the porcelain cool against her fingertips. Outside, the city lights glittered like scattered diamonds, a familiar spectacle that usually offered a comforting backdrop to her solitude. Tonight, however, they seemed to mock her, their brilliance a stark contrast to the shadowed corners of her heart. She sat in her opulent living room, the silence amplifying the thrum of her own anxieties, a symphony of what-ifs and regrets that had played on repeat for twenty-four years. Saim, her oldest friend, sat opposite her, her presence a warm, steady anchor in the turbulent sea of Scarlet’s emotions.

“It’s not just the absence, Saim,” Scarlet began, her voice barely above a whisper, raw with a pain that no amount of fame or fortune could ever heal. “It’s the why. The sheer, unadulterated terror that made me do it. I was so young, so utterly unprepared.” She closed her eyes, the image of a tiny, fragile infant seared into her memory. “And then, the emptiness. It’s been a constant companion. Every award, every standing ovation, every glowing review… it all felt hollow because I knew I’d left a piece of myself behind. A piece of us.”

Saim reached across the small table, her hand covering Scarlet’s. Her touch was gentle, understanding. “Scarlet, you were a child yourself, thrust into an impossible situation. The world saw a star rising, but it didn't see the girl behind the glamour, terrified and alone.”
