The aroma of freshly baked cookies, a scent Jason had grown to associate with the rare moments of warmth in the sprawling mansion, wafted through the hallway. He’d been exploring the vast library, a personal sanctuary of sorts, when the sweet fragrance beckoned him. Following his nose, he found himself in the sun-drenched kitchen, where Fourth Sister, Clara, was meticulously arranging a cooling rack laden with golden-brown delights.

Clara was a study in quiet diligence. Her usually reserved demeanor, often mistaken for aloofness, was softened by the gentle concentration etched on her features as she worked. She was the most outwardly serene of his stepsisters, her movements precise, her voice a soft murmur. Jason had often observed her, a silent observer of her quiet world, and had used one of his wishes to subtly enhance her artistic supplies and provide her with a private studio space, hoping to encourage the artist he suspected lay dormant within.

“They smell divine, Clara,” Jason said, leaning against the doorframe with a genuine smile. He’d learned that genuine warmth, devoid of ulterior motives, was a powerful tool in this house of carefully constructed walls.
