The youngest stepsister, Anya, was a force of nature. She was a tempest in a teacup, a whirlwind of bright, defiant energy that seemed to perpetually swirl around the edges of the grand estate. While her elder sisters moved with a practiced, almost regal grace, Anya darted. She skittered and skipped, her laughter like the tinkling of wind chimes caught in a gale, a sound that often punctuated the otherwise hushed atmosphere of their opulent home. Her hair, a riot of untamed curls the color of burnt caramel, was perpetually escaping whatever clip or ribbon attempted to restrain it. Her eyes, a startling shade of emerald green, were quick to flash with amusement or, more often, a spark of defiance.

Jason had observed her from a distance since his arrival. He’d seen her sneak extra cookies from the pantry, leaving a trail of crumbs like a breadcrumb path for a fairy tale character. He’d witnessed her staging elaborate pillow fights with the household staff’s bewildered cats, their indignant meows quickly dissolving into purrs under her surprisingly gentle touch. He’d even caught her, on more than one occasion, scaling the ancient oak tree in the sprawling gardens, her small frame disappearing amongst the leaves with an agility that impressed him.

The other sisters, particularly the eldest, Elara, often regarded Anya’s antics with a sigh and a pursed lip. Anya, in turn, seemed to thrive on their disapproval, her rebellions escalating with each disapproving glance. It was a dance they’d perfected, a familiar rhythm of exasperation and defiance.
