The scent of turpentine and linseed oil hung in the air, a fragrant cloud that clung to the second floor of the sprawling mansion. Jason found himself drawn to this wing, a quiet sanctuary dedicated to canvases, easels, and the hushed rustle of charcoal on paper. This was the domain of his second stepsister, Elara, a girl whose presence was as delicate as a whispered secret. He’d seen her from afar, a fleeting shadow in hallways, her eyes often cast down, her shoulders perpetually hunched as if carrying an invisible weight.

He found her in what served as her studio, a room bathed in the soft, diffused light of a north-facing window. Canvases, some finished, some abandoned, leaned against walls, depicting landscapes that bled with emotion and portraits that seemed to capture the very soul of their subjects. They were raw, uninhibited, a stark contrast to the carefully curated perfection of the rest of the estate.

Elara herself was perched on a stool, a charcoal stick poised above a fresh sheet of paper. Her brow was furrowed in concentration, her lips pressed into a thin line. She had a cascade of dark, wavy hair that fell around her shoulders, and her large, expressive eyes, the color of stormy seas, held a hint of melancholy. When she noticed him, she flinched, her hand jerking, leaving a smudge of charcoal across the nascent sketch. A faint blush bloomed on her cheeks.
