The grand estate hummed with a quiet, almost oppressive order. It was a symphony of hushed footsteps, the rustle of expensive fabrics, and the distant, polite chime of clocks marking the passage of time. Jason, still adjusting to the sheer opulence and the unnerving silence that often permeated these halls, found himself drawn, almost magnetically, to the study. It was here, he’d learned, that the eldest of his new stepsisters, Seraphina, spent most of her time.
He’d seen her, of course, in the brief, stilted introductions. A vision of cool composure, her dark hair pulled back in a severe bun, her eyes the colour of a winter sky, sharp and assessing. She moved with an almost regal grace, her posture impeccable, her every word measured and precise. She was the embodiment of responsibility, the unwavering pillar of this sprawling, complicated family. And, Jason suspected, the most formidable ice wall he had yet to encounter.
He found her at the large mahogany desk, poring over stacks of documents. The late afternoon sun, filtering through the leaded glass windows, cast long, dancing shadows that did little to warm the room. Seraphina didn't look up as he entered, her focus absolute.
