The air in the grand dining hall, usually a symphony of polite clinking and hushed conversation, had taken on a different tune. It was a discordant note, sharp and unsettling, that rippled through the assembled family like a stone dropped into still water. Tonight, the annual Beaumont Charity Gala was not just an event; it was a crucible.

Lady Beaumont, Jason’s mother, a woman whose elegance had always been a comforting presence, now wore a mask of strained composure. Her gaze flickered towards Elara, the eldest of his stepsisters, who sat with an unnerving stillness at the head of the table. Elara, usually the picture of unruffled grace, was rigid, her knuckles white where she gripped the edge of her silk gown. The cause of this tension was a hushed rumor, a whisper that had begun to snake its way through the glittering guests, finding its way to their ears like a venomous serpent.

“It’s simply not true, Mother,” Elara said, her voice a low, controlled tremor. “A misunderstanding.”
