The afternoon sun, a benevolent eye in the vast azure sky, cast long, lazy shadows across the sprawling gardens of the Atherton estate. Jason, armed with nothing more than a watering can and a gentle smile, was tending to a particularly stubborn rose bush. Its blooms, a vibrant crimson, seemed to mirror the burgeoning warmth he felt in his chest whenever he thought of his new family. Ten stepsisters. It still felt like a dream, a wonderfully, impossibly chaotic dream. And today, he was facing down one of the more… spirited members of that family: the youngest, Lily.

Lily, all sharp angles and a perpetual glint of mischief in her emerald eyes, was perched precariously on the garden wall, a half-eaten apple in one hand and a smug expression on her face. She’d been observing Jason’s horticultural efforts with the detached amusement of a seasoned critic.

"Still playing with dirt, Jason?" she drawled, her voice laced with its usual playful disdain. "Don't you get bored of it? There are actual things to do, you know. Like plotting world domination, or at least the overthrow of Mrs. Gable's prize-winning petunias."
