The afternoon sun, a benevolent eye in the vast azure sky, cast long, lazy shadows across the sprawling gardens of the Atherton estate. Jason, armed with nothing more than a watering can and a gentle smile, was tending to a particularly stubborn rose bush. Its blooms, a vibrant crimson, seemed to mirror the burgeoning warmth he felt in his chest whenever he thought of his new family. Ten stepsisters. It still felt like a dream, a wonderfully, impossibly chaotic dream. And today, he was facing down one of the more… spirited members of that family: the youngest, Lily.

Lily, all sharp angles and a perpetual glint of mischief in her emerald eyes, was perched precariously on the garden wall, a half-eaten apple in one hand and a smug expression on her face. She’d been observing Jason’s horticultural efforts with the detached amusement of a seasoned critic.

"Still playing with dirt, Jason?" she drawled, her voice laced with its usual playful disdain. "Don't you get bored of it? There are actual *things* to do, you know. Like plotting world domination, or at least the overthrow of Mrs. Gable's prize-winning petunias."
