Katelyn’s voice, sharp and brittle as frost on a windowpane, sliced through the otherwise hushed common hall. It was midday, the sunbeams, thick with dust motes, illuminating the cavernous space of the mansion’s seventh floor, where students often congregated between classes. I was attempting to decipher a particularly dense passage in Advanced Arcane Theory, my brow furrowed in concentration, when the familiar barb landed.

“Still trying to conjure a spark, Randy?” she sneered, her voice carrying with an almost theatrical flourish. A small knot of her sycophants giggled behind her, their faces a mixture of amusement and feigned sympathy. Katelyn herself, draped in the school’s deep crimson robes, radiated an aura of effortless superiority. Her silver hair, intricately braided, gleamed under the light, and her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, held a perpetual glint of disdain. She was, after all, the third most powerful student in the school, a fact she never let anyone forget.

I flinched, not from the words themselves, but from the familiar sting of being singled out, of being the perpetual butt of every joke. My fingers tightened around my worn copy of the textbook. “Just studying, Katelyn,” I mumbled, trying to keep my voice even, my gaze fixed on the page. Anything to avoid meeting her eyes, to avoid the trap of engaging.
