The air in Elara’s study was thick with the scent of aged parchment and something akin to dried lavender, a perfume that clung to the very stone of the ancient tower. Sunlight, filtered through the stained-glass windows depicting scenes of forgotten sorcery, painted shifting mosaics on the floor. I sat across from Elara, the weight of her words settling on me like a shroud. Zoe, ever vigilant, stood by the window, her gaze fixed on the distant, sprawling grounds of the academy, but I knew her attention was as sharp and focused as mine.
“The King of Magic,” Elara began, her voice a low murmur that seemed to resonate with the history held within these walls, “was a visionary. He didn’t just build this school; he built a bulwark. He foresaw the shadow that Lord Valerius casts, a darkness that has been gathering strength for centuries.”
